Goodbye, Oh Thought
A Poem on Thoughts, the Mind, and the King of Both
A poem echoing the truths of 2 Corinthians 10:5 and Philippians 4:8.
May Christ be glorified.
Hello, oh thought, unwanted thought, you want to stick, but you cannot. You try and try, and try, you may, but I must flick you, thought, away. For some thoughts, when they enter in, remind me not of Christ, but sin— of sin, and death, and nothing true. So I must do away with you. But though I flick you from my brain, I know in time you’ll come again. So I must often flick and flick the sticky thoughts away quite quick Before they stick and burrow in their roots that often bring forth sin. And as I flick, God gives me grace to press on in this messy race, To flick away the thoughts that kill, so thoughts of life have room to dwell. Goodbye, oh thought, unwanted thought, you want to stick but you cannot. So go, you must, fly far away, for even o’er my mind, Christ reigns.

This reminded me of reading a Dr. Seuss rhyme. Yes the words roll off the tongue, but his words feel deep and standing for something and I feel, this poem does that as well. And as I'm reading comments, it seems like this came together wonderfully well in a parking lot? I love that! I do think the brain is on a different track in those moments and some of our best work comes out in our tightest little spaces of time!
This is really good and creative. I've written poems in the church parking lot a couple times. It usually is when the best work comes out.
